3 Struggles of Connecting with Each Other in the “Social Media” Age
It wasn’t too long ago when all we needed to get in touch with someone was a simple phone number in our miniature sized “cellular phones.” Growing up, I remember my mother keeping a small black book of numbers whenever she wanted to get in touch with an old friend, a family member, or even a small shop or restaurant to see what time they were open for business.
Those days of having minimalist contact lists and address books are over. Ever since the generation of “apps” and “social media”, the whole communication landscape has changed. The multitude of ways we connect with each other has increased exponentially. And while that is a great convenience, it also brings about some serious challenges and time wastage as well.
Here are just 3 issues we all experience when connecting with each other in the new age of apps and social media:
1. Too much to keep up with
It seems as though every time we open our phone there’s a new selection of social app bandwagons that people are jumping on. Just to name a few, within the past 10 years, we’ve seen the likes of Instagram, Snapchat, WhatsApp, and now TikTok take the social game by storm. While these are all great tools to connect faster with others, it becomes difficult to manage and organize. By the time you open up your iPhone or Samsung after reading this, there will probably be another social media fad where you will face the FOMO (Fear of Missing Out).
2. Cluttered Contact Lists
Have you ever opened your phone’s contact list in attempt to search for your buddy’s number who you haven’t messaged in a while, and end up finding a flurry of identical names and now have no clue which one to click? I think at some point we’ve all been there.
Nowadays, we have an over-saturation of contact methods as well as an overloaded number of methods to save them. Most often when we add someone’s number in our phone, we may also add them on Facebook, follow them on Instagram, and start messaging them on WhatsApp here and there. This can create serious duplication issues when we open our phone’s contacts app in which you now have multiple accounts listed with the same name.
While there are different apps/methods out there to try and minimize the duplication, they are far from perfect. Not to mention that it is nearly impossible to decipher the various names and nicknames people can create. Better yet, if we don’t have the time to gather someone’s phone number, and end up following them on a social media platform only, we can easily lose contact with this person if they choose to deactivate their social media account. That brings us to our last challenge…
3. Never knowing if the information is up-to-date
One of the most frustrating things is having to go on your Facebook profile to update your status to, “got a new phone… DM me for the new number”. Or maybe it’s more frustrating for those who now have to message this person for their new number. If you’re like me, I just keep scrolling. With this new age of fast-paced connecting and instant messaging, we still haven’t found an efficient way to keep contact information up-to-date. Wouldn’t it be great to not have to go through a long-winded process for changing such information and losing all the close social circles who rely on simple methods to get in touch with you?
